What are dental crowns?

A dental crown is a type of cover for your natural teeth. This cover improves the appearance and function of the compromised tooth, improving its shape, color and size. You may need a crown if you have a cavity that is too large to receive a filling; if your tooth is cracked; if you undergo root canal; or if you merely want to improve the aesthetic appearance of a tooth.

What are the benefits of dental crowns?

  • Protection – Placing a crown over a compromised tooth following treatment can prevent further damage.
  • Durability – Modern dental crowns can withstand normal biting forces. Dr. Rink uses materials that are built to last.
  • Natural-looking results – For the most realistic results, Dr. Rink offers crowns made from tooth-colored materials including IPS Empress, IPS e.max, and zirconia.

Do dental crowns really look like natural teeth?

In most cases, Dr. Rink recommends tooth-colored crowns to his patients. These materials allow you to achieve the most realistic results while still providing the strength your tooth needs.

However, he also understands that each patient has unique treatment goals and priorities. He has a broad spectrum of crown materials for you to choose from, including gold. Regardless of the material you choose, you can expect that your restoration will fit properly, restore the function and comfort of your smile, and last for years with proper care.

What is CEREC?

Dr. Rink can create same-day porcelain crowns using CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) technology. Dr. Rink takes a digital impression of your prepared tooth, which guides computerized tools in creating your crown from a single block of porcelain. He then finalizes the restoration by hand before securing it to your tooth.

What is the Treatment Process?

  • Consultation – Dr. Rink will conduct a thorough evaluation of your oral health and explain your options to determine if a dental crown is the best solution for you. You and Dr. Rink can also decide which material to use for your crown.
  • Preparation – Before your crown is placed, Dr. Rink will remove the damaged or decayed portions of the tooth. He will also need to reshape the tooth so that your crown can fit among surrounding teeth.
  • Design – Dr. Rink will then take precise digital impressions of your bite. These images are used to design the crown. If you choose to receive a porcelain crown, he can then use CEREC to create your restoration on-site.
  • Placement – When your crown is ready, Dr. Rink will use dental cement to secure it onto the remaining tooth structure or dental implant. He can make any necessary adjustments at this time to ensure a comfortable and balanced bite.

What are the applications of dental crowns?

Dental crowns are commonly used to restore teeth after a root canal procedure (the removal of the tooth's inner pulp to eradicate advanced decay). The remaining tooth structure is altered to accommodate the crown, which brings the jaws into proper balance, restores chewing ability, and helps your smile to look healthy and normal.

If you have lost a single tooth, a crown can also be used to restore a dental implant at our Charleston cosmetic dentistry practice. If you are missing one or several teeth and require a dental bridge, crowns can be placed over the teeth on either side of the gap in your smile to support the bridge. Crowns are commonly used in full mouth restoration plans.

How are dental crowns placed?

Creating a dental crown traditionally requires two to three weeks, but thanks to CEREC technology, we can create a customized, natural-looking dental crown in about an hour. CEREC uses computer-aided drafting (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) technology, the same used in industrial applications since the late 1970s.

After your tooth has been prepared, we use this technology to take a digital impression of your smile. This detailed map of your teeth and gums is then used to guide a special milling machine that uses diamond-tipped tools to craft your dental crown from a single block of porcelain, selected to match the color of your teeth. After about an hour, your crown will be ready to try on.

First, the crown will be placed without an adhesive to gauge its fit. If necessary, Dr. Rink will make adjustments. Once the crown fits precisely, and your bite feels comfortable, a special dental cement is applied and your crown is set in place.

What is the best way to care for dental crowns?

Dental crowns are designed to withstand the pressure of chewing, but they can become dislodged if they are subjected to too much strain, or if you fail to brush and floss properly. When enjoying especially hard or sticky foods, you should try to remain mindful of your restoration and avoid using it to chew.

When flossing around a dental crown, it is important to pull the floss outward between your teeth, rather than moving the floss up and down. This simple change in flossing technique can help you avoid pulling your crown from its foundation.

I have had some bad experiences with dentists, but this office is a whole different experience. I've been going there for over 5 years, and I'm completely satisfied.
