About the Process of Making Traditional Dental Crowns

Before we can discuss the benefits of same-day crowns, it's important to go over the traditional method of crafting dental crowns.

In the past, creating a dental crown and having it placed required two separate dental visits and up to two weeks. The tooth was prepped for the crown first, then an impression was taken of the prepped tooth. This impression was sent to an off-site dental lab to be crafted, during which time the patient would wear temporary crowns. The dental lab then sent the crown back to the practice for the dentist to affix in place.

Thankfully there's a better way of doing this.

The CEREC® Technology Difference

With CEREC® technology, the dental lab is now effectively located at the office. The CEREC® machine is its own dedicated on-site dental mill and lab. Dentists prep the tooth as they normally would, and then take a digital impression of the tooth. Using an advanced computer system, a custom crown can be devised and adjusted.

This information is then sent to the CEREC® milling unit, which creates the crown there at the practice using a block of dental porcelain. Once the milling unit is done, the custom crown can then be fixed in place to cap a patient's tooth.
