Signs Your Dentures Need to Be Replaced
By John Rink DDS on May 10, 2018
Custom-made full and partial dentures are common and affordable tooth replacement options. However, even though they are strong and durable, they will not last forever.
Like all dental restorations, they will need to be replaced eventually for optimal oral health. Today, our team at the Charleston Center for Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry in Charleston, SC will discuss common signs that indicate your dentures need to be replaced.
Lifespan of Dentures
Dentures can be fabricated from a variety of quality dental materials, ranging from acrylic to high-quality ceramic. No matter what they are made of, dentures have an average lifespan of seven to 10 years. If you have been wearing the same set of dentures beyond ten years, be sure to have them assessed by your dentist to make sure they are still functioning as expected.
Changes in Fit
Over the years, the fit of your dentures will inevitably change. This is due to constant shifts in the underlying bone structure. Loose or wobbly dentures can make routine tasks such as eating and speaking rather challenging. Conversely, if you do not wear your dentures on a regular basis, your prosthesis could fit too tightly.
For these reasons, we recommend that you have your dentures inspected routinely and relined approximately every two years. If you have your dentures maintained on a regular basis and you still notice significant changes in the way they fit, it may be time to consider replacing them.
Broken Teeth
If artificial teeth or other components on your dentures break, it does not necessarily mean your dentures will need replaced. In some cases, your dentures may simply need repaired. It is important, however, to have them assessed by a dental professional. Attempting to repair your dentures at home could lead to serious oral health problems, including bite issues and TMJ disorder.
Broken Denture Base
If the base of your dentures breaks, the appliance will need to be replaced. The base is the single most important aspect of your dentures. If it is damaged, your dentures will no longer be functional.
Stained or Dirty Dentures
As time goes on, your dentures may develop tiny cracks or fractures. This not only causes your dentures to become dirty and lackluster, but it can also result in bacteria hiding inside these areas. If not addressed, this can cause an infection to develop in the gums, resulting in a host of dental issues.
Unexplained Pain or Discomfort
Ill-fitting dentures can cause unexpected aches and pains. For example, neck, shoulder, back, or dental pain are all reasons to have your dentures evaluated for a proper fit.
The Importance of Replacing Your Dentures
When the dental lab designs your dentures, your prosthesis will be custom-crafted to fit your anatomy. This will not only help you chew, eat, and speak easily, it will also keep your bite and jaw in their proper locations.
Atrophy of the bone ridge is a common byproduct of prolonged tooth loss. As the bone density gradually changes over time, your bite will change significantly as well. It is imperative that you attend all routine dental appointments so that your doctor can monitor your bite and recommend denture replacement when it is necessary.
