The Accreditation Process

In the history of the Academy, there have been just under 450 accredited members. The process requires extensive knowledge, studying, and commitment to reaching one’s full potential. To receive an accreditation from the AACD, doctors must complete three steps.

Written Examination

This examination covers a broad spectrum of topics regarding cosmetic dentistry, including:

  • Porcelain Restorations
  • Periodontics
  • Orthodontics
  • Dental Implants
  • Posterior Aesthetic Restorations
  • Dental Bridges
  • Teeth Whitening
  • Smile Design

As the first part of accreditation, this exam is designed to test applicants' foundational knowledge, with a particular emphasis on aesthetics. If the applicant passes this exam, they can proceed to the next step in the process.

Clinical Case Submissions

During the clinical case submissions portion of the accreditation, dentists have the opportunity to demonstrate their diagnostic skills and clinical excellence. In addition to passing the written exam, applicants must also attend two workshops before this step. Once they have qualified, doctors must complete five case types that demonstrate excellence in a range of dental disciplines. The five required case types are:

  • Six or more indirect restorations
  • One or two indirect restorations
  • Tooth replacement
  • Direct resin restoration
  • Six or more direct resin veneers

Applicants who pass this portion are then invited to participate in the oral examination.

Oral Examination

Following the completion of the written examination and the submission of the required clinical cases, the AACD administers an oral examination to verify and authenticate the dentist's casework and to evaluate their treatment abilities.

During the exam, doctors are tested on their knowledge and familiarity with diagnosis, treatment planning, materials, and various techniques. Once the dentist has successfully completed the oral examination phase, they will become an Accredited Member of the AACD.
